Rutland Food Waste Service update (11-03-2026)

Good afternoon,

Mobilisation of Rutland’s new food waste service is continuing, with focus switching to the delivery of new food waste caddies this week.

I hope you find this latest update useful. I would also be grateful if you could assist our communications by sharing the following information on your social media channels and websites:

 Bin swaps

Waste crews completed approximately 8,500 black bins swaps last week, replacing old 240l black bins with new 140l bins. Bin swaps will continue during w/c Monday 16 March, to coincide with the next round of normal household waste (black bin) collections in Rutland. For households who are yet to have their black bin swapped, their existing 240 litre bin will be emptied first, as normal. A second crew will then remove it and leave a new 140 litre bin in its place. If a new bin has not been provided by the end of the collection day, residents should contact Customer Services via MyAccount, email or phone.

Delivery and use of new food caddies

Food waste caddies are now being delivered, ready for weekly food waste collections to begin from Monday 30 March. Each household will get two caddies: a small kitchen caddy to keep indoors and a larger outdoor caddy for kerbside collection. Both caddies will be delivered at the same time and left on the kerbside outside people’s homes. The smaller caddy will be placed securely inside the larger caddy, along with a written guide that explains how to use them both correctly. Residents should continue to treat food waste as household waste until 30 March, after which they should stop putting any food waste into their black bins.

 Side waste

Because food waste collections do not begin until Monday 30 March, we are collecting an extra bag of side waste along with new 140 litre black bins from 2 March to 27 March. Anyone who has applied for additional household waste capacity and had their application approved can put out more than one bag of side waste until their extra capacity has arrived.

 Additional capacity

The online application process by which eligible households can apply for additional household waste capacity is live. This is available for families of five or more, people with medical needs and those with children aged under two years in nappies. If an application is approved, these households will receive:

  • Families with children in nappies – a 240litre bin instead of a 140litre bin
  • Large families of 5 or more people – a 240litre bin in addition to a 140litre bin
  • Residents with medical needs – a 240litre bin in addition to a 140litre bin

Applications for extra household waste capacity can be made via MyAccount, email or phone. Once approved, we aim to deliver additional capacity to these households within 15-20 working days. A reminder that any household in Rutland can request an additional 240litre grey bin in the same way, if they produce a lot of recycling.

Our full Food Waste FAQ remains available to view on the Council’s website at: www.rutland.gov.uk/recycling, together with guides that explain exactly what items should be placed into black and grey bins.
